October 08th 2024: Yogesh Bairagi of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken the lead in the Julana constituency, surpassing Congress candidate Vinesh Phogat by a margin exceeding 2,000 votes. Initially, Phogat, an Olympian, had been ahead in the race against Bairagi. As of 9:51 AM, the vote count indicated that Phogat had garnered 4,114 votes, while Bairagi was trailing with 3,900 votes. The electoral contest in Julana also features other candidates, including Amarjeet Dhanda, the incumbent Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), and Kavita Dalal, representing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and also a wrestler. The Julana seat has attracted significant attention, particularly due to Phogat’s nomination by the Congress party, which has been bolstered by her notable achievements in athletics and her advocacy for the rights of wrestlers. Furthermore, Julana holds personal significance for Phogat, as it is not only her constituency but also the hometown of her in-laws, adding a personal dimension to her campaign efforts. The Julana Assembly seat is situated within the Jind district, which encompasses five assembly constituencies: Julana, Safidon, Jind, Uchana Kalan, and Narwana. Reports suggest a competitive race between Uchana Kalan and Narwana, with Congress potentially poised to secure victories in the remaining three seats. Historically, Jind has been a significant political arena, characterized by intense competition among various parties. In the 2019 elections, Amarjeet Dhanda of the JJP emerged victorious in Julana, reflecting the party’s influence in a region where voter loyalties are often fluid. The constituency’s political landscape has seen various shifts, with the Indian National Lok Dal’s (INLD) Parminder Singh Dhull winning the assembly elections in both 2009 and 2014, while Congress’s Sher Singh held the seat in 2005. This historical context underscores the highly competitive nature of the Julana constituency and the challenges that each candidate must navigate in their pursuit of electoral success.
