In the border town of Moreh, located 110 km from the state capital Imphal, a Manipur Police commando lost his life today in an attack carried out by miscreants. Government sources have informed that the exchange of gunfire between security forces and miscreants has been ongoing since the morning. Reports indicate that the miscreants threw bombs and opened fire at a security post near Moreh, which serves as a significant trading hub on the India-Myanmar border.
Furthermore, the police have revealed that the miscreants also launched RPG shells at the temporary commando post, resulting in damage to several parked vehicles in the vicinity.
Wangkhem Somorjit, an IRB personnel attached to the state police commando in Moreh, has been identified as the commando who tragically lost his life. Somorjit, originally from Malom in Imphal West district, was the victim of the recent violence. This violence has occurred amidst widespread protests by Kuki groups, who are expressing their discontent after the police arrested two tribals for their alleged involvement in the killing of a police officer.
A video capturing the clash reveals armed miscreants forcefully pushing back a security truck as it attempts to enter Moreh.
In response to credible information regarding the potential breach of peace, disturbance of public tranquillity, and the grave danger posed to human lives and property within the revenue jurisdiction of Tengnoupal, the Manipur government has imposed a complete curfew starting from 12 am on January 16.
The District Magistrate of Tengnoupal has issued an order stating that the curfew will not be applicable to government agencies responsible for maintaining law and order and essential services.
The police have apprehended Phillip Khongsai and Hemokholal Mate, the two primary suspects in the killing of SDPO Ch Anand in October of last year. These individuals had opened fire on the security personnel’s vehicles, prompting the police to pursue and apprehend them.
