Uddhav Thackeray’s faction of the Shiv Sena announced on Saturday its decision to abstain from the oath-taking ceremony of the newly-elected members of the Maharashtra Assembly, signaling a continuation of their campaign against the electronic voting machines (EVMs) within the legislative assembly. This move underscores the faction’s commitment to contesting the legitimacy of the election results, which they attribute to perceived irregularities in the voting process.
Aaditya Thackeray, a prominent leader of the Shiv Sena UBT, expressed his concerns to the press, articulating a belief that the election outcomes do not reflect the will of the electorate but rather the influence of the EVMs and the Election Commission. He emphasized that if the results truly represented the people’s choice, there would have been widespread celebrations among the populace, which he claims did not occur. This sentiment reflects a broader skepticism regarding the integrity of the electoral process.
Thackeray further asserted that the current situation represents a grave threat to democratic principles, suggesting that the reliance on EVMs has led to a distortion of the electoral mandate. He firmly stated that the results of the Maharashtra Assembly elections should not be viewed as a reflection of public opinion but rather as a product of the technological and administrative mechanisms employed in the voting process. This stance highlights the faction’s ongoing struggle to challenge the electoral framework and advocate for what they perceive as a more transparent and accountable democratic process.
