Islamabad: Pakistan has made a notable announcement on the social media platform X, revealing its intention to nominate former US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The post highlights Trump’s significant diplomatic involvement and leadership during the recent tensions between India and Pakistan, asserting that his intervention played a crucial role in de-escalating the conflict between the two nuclear-armed nations. However, this assertion has been firmly rejected by India, which contends that it was Islamabad that initiated contact with New Delhi to negotiate a ceasefire, a resolution that was reached independently of any US influence. This perspective was communicated to Trump during a recent phone conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In response to the ongoing discourse about his contributions to peace, Trump has reiterated his belief that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for various diplomatic efforts, including those related to India and Pakistan, as well as his involvement in a treaty aimed at resolving hostilities between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, which is anticipated to be signed soon. Trump expressed his frustration over not receiving the award, claiming he should have been honored multiple times, and suggested that the Nobel committee tends to favor liberal candidates over his achievements. He further lamented on his Truth Social platform that despite his efforts in various global conflicts, including those involving Serbia and Kosovo, Egypt and Ethiopia, and the Abraham Accords in the Middle East, he remains skeptical about ever being recognized with the prestigious prize. Trump concluded by asserting that public recognition of his contributions is what truly matters to him, regardless of the Nobel committee’s decisions.
