The founder-chancellor of Chandigarh University, Satnam Singh Sandhu, has been nominated by the President to the Rajya Sabha, as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a social media post. PM Modi expressed his delight at the nomination, highlighting Satnam Singh Sandhu’s accomplishments as an educationist and social worker. He commended Satnam Singh Sandhu’s dedication to serving the people at the grassroots level and his efforts in promoting national integration and working with the Indian diaspora. PM Modi extended his best wishes to Satnam Singh Sandhu for his journey in the Rajya Sabha, expressing confidence that his views will enrich the proceedings of the esteemed institution.
The home ministry has issued a notification stating that President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Sandhu as a member of the upper house of Parliament. Sandhu, who comes from a farming background, is recognized as one of India’s prominent educationists. The notification highlights Sandhu’s journey as an agriculturist who faced challenges in pursuing education. It also acknowledges his significant contributions, such as establishing the Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) in Landran, Mohali in 2001, and the formation of Chandigarh University in 2012. Sandhu’s dedication to improving health and wellness and promoting communal harmony is evident through his active participation in large-scale community initiatives. He has established two NGOs, namely the Indian Minorities Foundation and the New India Development Foundation, which serve as platforms for driving positive change. Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed his support for Sandhu’s nomination to the Rajya Sabha in a social media post, highlighting the significance of his contributions.
Dhankhar expressed his belief that the Rajya Sabha will greatly benefit from the extensive contributions made by the individual in community service, as well as their unwavering dedication to education, innovation, and continuous learning.
