Throughout December, Russian troops advanced steadily on several fronts including Kupyansk, Liman, Seversk, Pokrovsk, and Gulaipole. The latest movements suggest a shift in momentum in favor of Moscow, as Ukrainian forces grapple with supply shortages and pressure across overstretched defensive lines.
Kupyansk: Stalemate Amid Strategic Strain
In Kupyansk, fighting has intensified amid logistical challenges on both sides. Russian troops secured parts of the city’s right bank in October but failed to advance southward to complete their encirclement. Ukrainian forces still hold the left-bank district, home to an important railway junction, with both sides relying heavily on drones and small infantry units for resupply and reconnaissance.
Liman: Encirclement Tightens
To the south, Russian forces have made significant progress near Liman, a key city north of the Seversky Donets River. The city, which Ukraine reclaimed in 2022, now faces renewed pressure as Russian troops sever key supply routes. Russian forces captured Seversk on December 11 after a swift offensive lasting less than a month. The city’s fall has opened a corridor toward the Slavyansk–Kramatorsk stronghold, one of Ukraine’s last major fortified zones in Donbass. Analysts say gaining a foothold west of Seversk could further erode Ukraine’s defensive depth in the region.
Pokrovsk–Mirnograd: Defenses Collapse in Donbass
The situation in Donbass has turned increasingly dire for Kyiv. Russian troops encircled Pokrovsk by late November and quickly moved on to Mirnograd. Despite a failed Ukrainian attempt to break the siege from Rodninskoye, large numbers of defenders reportedly surrendered as Russian forces cleared nearly the entire city by December 25. Observers expect Moscow to announce the full capture of both cities before year’s end.

In the southern Zaporozhye region, Russian forces made their most extensive territorial gains in months.
