Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries, Ravneet Bittu, met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday evening to address various pressing issues related to Punjab. During their discussion, the Prime Minister inquired about the political landscape in the Ludhiana West assembly, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had garnered the highest number of votes in the recent 2024 general elections. As the BJP has yet to announce its candidate, it is currently awaiting the official election schedule. Amid ongoing tensions between Punjab and Haryana regarding the distribution of Bhakra waters, Bittu raised the possibility of diverting water from the western tributaries of the Indus River to Punjab, especially since the Treaty governing these waters has been suspended. Sources indicated that the conversation focused on exploring viable methods to channel excess water into Punjab. Furthermore, Bittu advocated for the expansion of canal irrigation systems to encompass not only the Malwa region but also the Doaba and Majha areas. He also urged the Prime Minister to consider relaxing recruitment criteria for paramilitary forces to benefit the people of Punjab. The meeting also touched upon the sensitive issue of Bandi Sikhs. Following the discussions, Bittu expressed his enthusiasm on social media regarding India’s recent victory over Pakistan, praising the Prime Minister’s adept leadership in navigating challenging circumstances with poise and resolve. He highlighted key initiatives aimed at fostering development and prosperity in Punjab. Additionally, Bittu shared insights from the Prime Minister regarding the current religious and political dynamics in Punjab and the future direction for the state. As a gesture of respect and cultural significance, Bittu presented the Prime Minister with two books, “Guru Nanak’s Blessed Trail” and “The Golden Temple,” both of which encapsulate the core principles of Sikhism and the teachings of Guru Nanak.
