Chandigarh, August 2 (Shiv Narayan Jangra): Punjab Sports and Youth Services Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, on Monday, cheered up Kamalpreet Kaur for her final event of discus throw at Tokyo Olympics watching live telecast at his office at Punjab Civil Secretariat-1 along with Principal Secretary Mr. Raj Kamal Chaudhuri, Director Sports Mr. D.P.S Kharbanda and Joint Director Mr. Kartar Singh and others.
Rana Sodhi got emotional many times while watching Kamalpreet Kaur’s live event and said, “Although Kamalpreet Kaur missed out her best throw in final, but still she delivered India’s best-ever finish with 6th rank as out of total 12 finalists, she qualified for three more throws with grabbing sixth rank in the overall standing.
Earlier, interacting with her parents at village Kabarwala (Malout) virtually before the final event of Kamalpreet Kaur at Tokyo, Rana Sodhi wished them all the best for this historic moment. He said, “Every Punjabi is proud that Kamalpreet Kaur has brought the name of Punjab and India on the world map.”
Although the event was stopped due to rain, the enthusiasm of the Sports Minister and the officials watching the event did not abate and everyone consistently kept praying for Kamalpreet Kaur’s victory, but it was not our day.
Pertinently, National record holder Kamalpreet Kaur had finished second in the Olympics with a throw of 64 meters and qualified for the final of Tokyo Olympics and with 65.06 meters throw, Kamalpreet broke the nine-year national record set by Commonwealth Games champion Krishna Punia in 2012 with a throw of 64.76 meters.
While rejoicing over the women Hockey team’s maiden entry into Olympic semifinals in the morning, Rana Sodhi tweeted “An incredible win! Truly inspirational from our girls as #TeamIndia beat three-time #Olympic gold medalist Australia 1-0. 1st time in semis creating history and winning our hearts too! #Punjab’s Gurjit Kaur scored the lone goal.”
