Says, Punjab Government continues efforts for welfare of minority groups children

Chandigarh, November 17

          The Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is committed to the welfare of minority groups students. Social Justice, Empowerment and Minorities Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur stated that providing education to children belonging to minority groups is the state government’s main priority.

          Cabinet Minister inister mentioned that students from the minority communities receive stipends for courses under the Merit Cum Means-Based Scholarship Scheme for higher education and professional institutes. The scheme’s primary goal is to assist students from extremely poor families in completing higher education. Sikh, Muslim, Christian, Parsi and Jain communities are covered in the Merit Cum Means Based Scholarship Scheme for Minorities by the Punjab Government. Stipends are provided to students in graduate, post-graduate and professional courses such as medical, nursing, pharmacy and management.

          She said that under this scheme, stipend is given to the student studying in the National listed institutions. Currently, full course fees is being reimbursed at IIT Ropar, Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology,(SLIET) Sangrur and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar(NIT).

          Minister clarified that students eligible for benefits must have scored not less than 50% marks in previous year examination. The annual income of parents/guardians not exceeding  Rs 2.50 lakhs. Both parents and students should be residents of Punjab and the student should be studying regularly in an educational institution to avail of the scheme’s benefits.
