India has expressed its willingness to eliminate 100% of tariffs on American goods, as indicated by President Trump during a recent interview with Fox News. Despite this significant offer, Trump emphasized that he is not in a hurry to finalize the proposed trade agreement with New Delhi. In response to Trump’s assertions about India’s high tariff rates, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reiterated the importance of ensuring that any trade deal is mutually beneficial for both nations. He highlighted the complexity of the ongoing negotiations, stating that no agreements are finalized until all aspects are settled. Meanwhile, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is currently in Washington to evaluate the progress of these discussions, engaging with key figures such as US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. India is particularly focused on securing duty concessions for various labor-intensive sectors, including textiles, gems and jewelry, leather goods, and agricultural products, as part of the proposed trade pact with the United States.
