Chandigarh, July 16 (Ozi news desk): The proposal to replace the Governor of Punjab with the Chief Minister as the Chancellor of state-run universities has faced a setback as the Punjab Universities Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2023, was recently returned without approval by the President of India to the Punjab Raj Bhavan.
According to official sources within the Raj Bhawan, there has been no update on the status of two other Bills that were also sent for presidential assent, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the legislative process.
In December 2023, the Punjab Governor Banwari Lal Purohit reserved the Bill, along with The Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and The Punjab Police (Amendment) Bill, 2023, for the President’s consideration under Article 200 of the Constitution. Despite being forwarded to the President, the amendments proposed in the Bill related to universities have not received the necessary approval, as confirmed by official sources in the Department of Higher Education.
