December 28, 2025 (Ozi News Desk) :- A winter storm swept through the US Northeast early on Saturday, disrupting post-holiday travel and leading to the cancellation of thousands of flights. Weather in New York and New Jersey prompted officials to issue emergency alerts as snow and ice bore down on the region.
People, mostly in the Northeast, were advised to stay vigilant and off the roads due to treacherous conditions caused by snow, freezing rain, and sleet. The winter storm brought several inches of snow from Pennsylvania to New England, heavily impacting New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
Overnight snow blankets New York, the heaviest in years
Videos circulating on social media showed New York blanketed in overnight snow. The city recorded the heaviest snowfall in recent years, with 2 to 4 inches, while Central Park reported more than four inches of snow.
Residents advised to stay cautious
“The safety of New Yorkers is my top priority, and I continue to urge extreme caution throughout the duration of this storm,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul said.
Heavy accumulation reported in several regions
Earlier on Saturday, heavier accumulations were reported in several parts, including Long Island, the Catskills, and central New York, where snowfall was recorded at 6 to 10 inches. Some portions of Connecticut and Massachusetts also witnessed significant accumulation.
Thousands of flights cancelled or delayed
The impact has been reduced, but continues to affect travelers. Thousands of domestic US flights were cancelled or delayed on Saturday mid-morning, with many located in New York City, including Newark Liberty International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport, according to a tracking site.
Several airlines’ representatives told Reuters that the change fees, usually charged to rebook passengers whose travel plans are impacted by weather-related disruptions, have been waived.
Ice storm alert in Pennsylvania
Winter weather advisories, ice storm alerts, and commercial vehicle restrictions have been issued in Pennsylvania. In a statement, New Jersey’s acting governor, Tahesha Way, said, “This storm will cause dangerous road conditions and impact holiday travel. We are urging travelers to avoid travel during the storm and allow crews to tend to roads.
