The Delhi High Court has asked the Election Commission to take a decision as soon as possible within eight weeks on the notice sent to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding his ‘pocket-cutting’ remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The High Court is hearing a Public Interest Litigation in which it was demanded that action be taken against Rahul Gandhi and guidelines be given to stop the bad practice of making such objectionable comments by political leaders. A bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan said that these statements were of a derogatory nature. The Election Commission is investigating them and has also issued a notice to Rahul Gandhi. The bench said that the time for filing a reply to the notice has lapsed and no reply has been received, so the court directs the Election Commission to dispose of it expeditiously but preferably within eight weeks. The court was told that the notice was sent on November 23 and the Election Commission itself has said that it will take appropriate action on the matter. Petitioner Bharat Nagar told the High Court that during a speech on November 22, Rahul Gandhi had made outrageous allegations against the Prime Minister, including other high-ranking people, and had called the Prime Minister a ‘Jebaktra’.
