MS Dhoni, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, appeared before the Delhi High Court to contest a defamation plea filed against him by his two former business partners. Dhoni argued that the plea was not maintainable. The high court, however, did not grant any interim order at this stage, refusing to injunct Dhoni, various media houses, and social media platforms from posting or publishing any alleged false defamatory content against the plaintiffs that could harm their reputation and goodwill. The plaintiffs, Mihir Diwakar and his wife Soumya Das, have sought a permanent injunction and damages against Dhoni, as well as social media platforms and media houses, to prevent them from making, publishing, or circulating defamatory statements that are false and malicious.
The representative of Dhoni presented themselves in front of the court and argued that the complaint lodged against him was not valid and could not be sustained. They further stated that Dhoni had recently filed a separate case against the couple in a court located in Ranchi.
The attorney representing Dhoni’s counsel reiterated that they had not yet received a copy of the complaint or any associated documents. They were only informed by the high court registry about the filing of the case, but had not been provided with the necessary paperwork.
In response to this, the court directed the plaintiffs’ counsel to promptly provide a comprehensive set of documents to Dhoni’s counsel within a three-day timeframe. This request aimed to ensure that both parties had access to all the relevant information and could proceed with the case accordingly.
The lawyer representing the plaintiffs emphasized the importance of fair reporting by the media. They argued that the media coverage against their clients had been unjust, as they had already been unjustly labeled as criminals and thieves. The lawyer sought to address this issue and requested that the media report the facts accurately and without bias.
