The Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the Election Commission to take a decision within eight weeks on the notice issued to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his alleged ‘pocket-cutting’ remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Congress leader had last month targeted the Prime Minister with ‘pocket lines’ and other comments. The court was hearing a public interest petition in which action against Gandhi has been requested as well as guidelines to prevent such ‘comments’ from political leaders. A bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan however said that the alleged statement was “not correct” and the Election Commission was investigating the matter and even issued a notice to Gandhi. A bench of Justice Manmohan and Justice Mini Pushkarna ordered, “Considering that the time limit for filing the reply has expired and no reply has been received, the court directs the Election Commission to look into the matter as soon as possible.” May quickly decide today within weeks. The court said that in the notice sent on November 23, the Election Commission itself had said that it would take appropriate action in this matter. Petitioner Bharat Nagar told the High Court that Gandhi had delivered a speech on November 22 in which “serious allegations” were made against persons holding “high government positions”, including the Prime Minister, and that they were “pickpocketed”.
