The President of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), S. Harmeet Singh Kalka, on Saturday visited flood relief camps set up by the committee in Dera Baba Nanak and Ajnala to support those affected by the recent floods in Punjab.
During his visit, S. Kalka met with flood-impacted families to understand their problems and assess the situation on the ground. He informed the media that two truckloads of relief materials had been distributed among the victims. The aid included essential items such as dry ration, food supplies, daily-use goods, medicines, tarpaulins, tracksuits, mosquito nets and mosquito repellants.
Kalka also stated that discussions were held with farmers to explore ways to restore flood-damaged farmland and bring it back into cultivation. “Now the challenge is to bring life back to normal after which we will again assess the requirements of the flood victims,” he told the media persons.
Since August 25, nearly 100 volunteers from DSGMC have been actively engaged in providing continuous relief work across various flood-affected areas. With the support of the Sikh community, the collected supplies are being delivered directly to those in need.
He further noted that the Union Agriculture Minister had recently toured the flood-hit regions of Punjab. Kalka assured that DSGMC will strongly advocate for a substantial relief package for Punjab from the Central Government.
“A large portion of Punjab is sunk for past three week and people are suffering, the life has been disturbed so the DSGMC has tried to make efforts to help people in the distress,” said S. Kalka. We have started medical camps and doctors have reached here to help the victim and also trying to supply adequate medicines.
He said the DSGMC teams are assessing the requirement of the people at this stage and will accordingly arrange the relief material. The flood affected areas have received enough food material and now they need is cattle feed and fodder, tarpaulins, seeds for next crop and support to rebuild houses, he informed. “The tubewells have sunk so the need to be re-dug they DSGMC will bring teams to help the farmers, so the tubewells could be dug again,” he said.
He appealed to a section of population in the flood affected Majha belt who had converted to other religion to be back into the fold of Sikhism. “We have seen that only Sikhs and Sikh organisation have come forward to support the distressed farmers,” he added. On being asked he attributed the disaster to illegal mining in the state.
He adds that the union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan has visited the flood hits area and hoped that an adequate compensation will be provided. He also welcomed the proposed visit of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to flood affected areas as positive step towards redressal of the grievances of people living in the border areas.
