On Tuesday, tensions in Manipur escalated as authorities enforced an indefinite curfew in both Imphal West and Imphal East, while also implementing prohibitory measures under Section 163 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita in Thoubal. This decision followed a wave of student protests that erupted in Imphal, calling for a return to law and order in the region, which has put pressure on Chief Minister N Biren Singh, who is struggling to manage the situation. Amidst this turmoil, Biren Singh has presented an ambitious list of demands to the central government, including a request to take control of the 12-member unified command, but it seems he is facing dwindling support from BJP MLAs, with some even urging the party to consider the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur.
