A significant accidental explosion occurred late Friday night at the Nowgam police station on the city’s outskirts, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals and injuring 29 others, according to official reports released on Saturday.
The explosion took place within the police station where the Jammu and Kashmir Police had stored explosives linked to a terror module associated with the Red Fort blast, following their recovery in Haryana.
Sources indicate that personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir State Investigative Agency (SIA) were present within the police station, as the agency has assumed responsibility for the investigation into the recent incident.
The explosion resulted in a significant fire that consumed the police station and several nearby vehicles. The blast was so intense that its sound reverberated several kilometers away, highlighting the severity of the situation.
Last month, the Jammu and Kashmir Police initiated an investigation into a series of threatening posters linked to the militant group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), which had surfaced in various locations throughout Srinagar’s Bunpora Nowgam. This led to the registration of a case by the Nowgam police, who subsequently uncovered a terror module with connections extending across multiple states.
During a brief press conference in Srinagar, Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat announced that nine individuals had lost their lives and 32 others sustained injuries. He characterized the incident as an “accidental explosion” and emphasized that further speculation regarding its cause was unwarranted. He also stated that an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event is currently underway.
Among those who perished in the explosion were an inspector from the SIA and a Naib Tehsildar from Srinagar.
