Chennai (Press Ki Taquat Bureau) November 2: Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are likely to continue across Tamil Nadu this week, according to the India Meteorological Department’s latest weather update. After the northeast monsoon hit the state on October 29, Chennai and its adjoining districts have witnessed widespread, heavy showers. Schools and colleges shall remain closed in 9 districts of Tamil Nadu today.
As many as two people have been killed in rain-related incidents in Chennai since Monday. A 45-year-old, Shanthi, from Pulianthope in Chennai died on Tuesday morning after a concrete slab collapsed on her and a 52-year-old auto driver, Devendhiran, got electrocuted to death near Vyasarpadi. Water entered houses in low-lying areas in some parts of north Chennai. Significantly, for the first time in three decades, Nungambakkam, a core city area, recorded 8 cm in a single day and suburban Red Hills 13 cm, followed by 12 cm in Perambur, also in the city.
According to S Balachandran, who heads Chennai’s Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai over the next few hours. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin on Tuesday chaired a meeting via video conference with all the district collectors and other officials to take stock of the preventive measures that have been implemented to mitigate flooding.
