On Monday, medical services in state-operated hospitals across Punjab, particularly in rural regions governed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), experienced significant disruptions due to a strike involving more than 2,500 doctors. This action was taken in response to various demands, which prominently included the reinstatement of the assured career progression scheme and the implementation of enhanced safety measures for medical personnel. Notably, emergency and intensive care units (ICUs) remained operational and were not affected by the strike. The Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMSA) had initially announced an indefinite strike, which was intended to close outpatient departments (OPDs) for three hours starting at 8 a.m. until September 11, following unsuccessful negotiations with the government. In light of the situation, the government has urged the medical professionals to postpone their strike and has requested additional time to address their concerns. Dr. Akhil Sarin, the president of the PCMSA, has issued a stern warning that should the government fail to meet their demands, a complete halt to health services will be implemented starting September 12.
